This is a Minnesota High School League (MSHSL) sponsored
activity/competition that is also presented to the school and community.
Any student in Grades 7-12 is eligible to participate. The MSHSL One
Act competition allows students the opportunity to improve their
skills, see dramatic presentations by other schools, and perform before a
critical audience. Students perform a one act play, either a play
written as a one act or a cut version of a full length play that is
viewed by a panel of judges and other students. The best play from each
competition advances to the next level culminating in the state
championship. The size of the cast is flexible and props and staging are
to be kept to a minimum.
The Minnesota State High School League State One Act Play Festival
does not involve direct competition. Judges rate the plays according to
specific criteria, including pace, blocking, costuming, and projection
of the play’s meaning. Each production is limited to 10 minutes of stage
preparation and 35 minutes of actual performance.
