Algebra I Syllabus

This book has several goals. It will introduce you to the language of algebra. It will help you prepare for geometry and other mathematics. It will help you learn about the many uses of algebra in the real world and deal with mathematics around you.

    Materials 
    You will be responsible for bringing the following items to class each day: 
  • Sharp Pencil (or Mechanical Pencil with lead) 
  • Eraser 
  • Text: UCSMP Algebra 
  • Notebook 
  • Folder or Binder to store handouts 
  • Calculator (this will be provided for in-class use only) 

    Attendance and Expectations 
    You are expected to attend every class. Unexcused absences and tardiness will not be tolerated. Excused absences must be cleared with the school office. However, excused absences may not excuse you from any course requirement or deadline. 

    You are responsible for any information that was presented in class while you were gone. Work assigned before your absence is due the first day that you return. You are responsible for turning in any homework that was assigned while you were gone and making up any tests and quizzes within three days of your return to receive full credit. 

    You are expected to come prepared for class, complete necessary readings, complete in-class and out-of-class assignments, and take occasional quizzes and tests. If you fail to complete and deliver an assignment according to instructions you may not receive full credit for your work. 

    Behavior Expectations 
    You are required to be on your best behavior throughout class. You must demonstrate a mature attitude at all times and show respect for your teacher and peers. 

    Tardies 
    Get to class, sit down, and begin working when the bell rings. Consequences will be given for more than 5 tardies. A student will be considered absent if more than 10 minutes tardy. 

    Leaving Class 
    Don’t count on it. I will rarely let you leave unless you have a very good reason and you have been on good behavior. 

    Tutoring 
    I will be in my room before school for tutoring on most days with the exception of Mondays. This may be extremely beneficial to students who do better working one-on-one or those who need a boost in their homework grade. You should make arrangements with me a day in advance. 

    Homework 
    Homework will be assigned daily. Part of the assignment is the reading of a lesson. If you experience difficulty with an assignment, be sure to read the lesson carefully and take notes. Do not skip any questions on the homework. If you continue to have difficulty with a question, place a “?” next to that question to be sure to get clarification during the next class period. 

    Answers 
    Answers to some questions are found in the back of the book. These are provided so you can monitor your progress as you work problems. Do not use those problems as an excuse not to work. You must complete each question on your own and show work for your homework. Students who copy answers are less likely to perform well on tests. 

    Late Work 
    Late work must be correctly labeled (name, class, date due, assignment) and placed in the correct late basket. If it is not correctly labeled it will not be corrected. You are docked a letter grade if it is a day late. Between 2 and 4 days late you may turn it in for half credit. Anything over a week late will be turned to a zero. Do not get in the habit of procrastinating! 

    Cheating 
    Cheating can be considered to be any of the following: copying answers from another student, giving answers to another student, using a digital device such as a phone or calculator to give or obtain answers to a test or quiz, discussing a test or quiz with another student, using a “cheat sheet” of any kind during a test or quiz, plagiarizing of any sort, or any other immoral and dishonest means to complete an assignment, quiz, or test for yourself or someone else. Anyone caught cheating will immediately receive a zero and will not have a second opportunity to make up the assignment, quiz, or test. Someone who has cheated may also face additional consequences as seen fit by the teacher or the dean of students. 

    Test Re-Takes 
    You will be allowed to make up any chapter test that you scored below a C-. I will take the higher of the two grades with a 70% C- as a maximum for the retest. You have to complete and additional assignment in order to retake the test. This must be completed within a week of the original test, and you must do it on your own time. 

    Extra Credit 
    You may complete up to two extra credit projects per quarter. Only those students who have all of their work turned in may attempt extra credit. Those who cannot turn in their regular work should not attempt extra work! 

    Seating 
    The teacher will determine seating and group arrangements. If you need a special seating assignment, or any other special arrangements, please notify me on the first day of class. 

    Book Covers 
    It is mandatory to have your book covered at all times throughout the semester. 

    Cell Phones/MP3 Players 
    Cell phones and MP3 players are a distraction to learning and are not allowed to be used during class without permission. This means that you cannot text, make calls, play games, watch videos, listen to music, or browse the Internet during class at any time. Cell phones must be turned off and set upside down on the desk at the beginning of each class period. You may not keep your phone in your pocket. If any of the above rules are broken, your cell phone/MP3 player will be confiscated and brought to Mr. Everett. 

    Grades 
    Grades will be weighted as follows: 
  • Chapter Tests: 30% (Re-takes are allowed for scores below a C-) 
  • Quizzes: 30% (The lowest score each quarter will be dropped) 
  • Homework: 40% 

    Letter grades will be determined using the following scale: 
    92-100 = A 
    90-92 = A- 
    87-90 = B+ 
    82-87 = B
    80-82 = B-
    77-80 = C+
    72-77 = C
    70-72 = C-
    67-70 = D+
    62-67 = D
    60-62 = D-
    0-60 = F
